It’s not hard to get a beatdown on any front page Gawker site. Voice an opinion that doesn’t match the approved narrative, ask a question that the commenters think you should already know the answer to, or just word something poorly, and they’ll shoot you down and continue to beat you up even after you apologize.

As far as your comment, well you do have a point; don’t do your job, get fired. However, Trump and his cronies are dangerous men, so I also understand their concern too. That said, it is ultimately like every other job. You do your job, even if the customer is someone you hate. And if you can’t do it, they’ll find someone who will. It’s not so much a Trump problem as it is how business works today. :(

Here’s the best bit of perspective that I can give you:

Whether you agree with her or not, she is being factually accurate in asserting a false equivalency. If take the sole standpoint of comparing the two examples presented, they are not equivalent. You have had to do some dicey shit for your job out of fear of losing your job. Not at all an uncommon occurrence, either for men or for women. What is an uncommon experience for men is being told to do their job and accept the fact that sexual harassment is just part of life. It’s not common for men to be forced to perform for an individual that clearly has little to no respect for your worth as an independent human being. On the other hand, that sort of thing is exceptionally common for women.

That’s where the assertion of false equivalency comes in - you are comparing a set of anecdotal experiences that you’ve had versus something that you’ve never experienced before, but is a common experience for women. In otherwords, both men and women get pressured into doing dicey things for fear of losing their job. As a general rule, however, women are the only ones that also get forced to deal with gender harassment in the work place while also performing for a man that has no respect for them in any way, shape, or form.

As for the rest.... having taken a look at it all, you got negative responses from one person. My father used to say that if you ran into an asshole, you ran into an asshole. If you run into multiple assholes, you’re the asshole. You’ve only run into one asshole here. You’re good. Just relax and don’t let yourself get too easily riled up by what you perceived as hostility. It’s the internet, and it’s all just a bunch of text - text that can be easily misinterpreted due to a lack of other cues.

If you are going to respond to something that you perceive as being potentially hostile in an attempt to cool things down and engage in constructive dialogue, then a better way to go about it would be to continue the dialogue as you would have if she didn’t respond with snark. Adding more snark of your own only makes things worse.

Also - and this is important - recognize that maybe they just don’t want to engage in dialogue of any kind. If you sense that, just let it go and move on; don’t try to push for it.

Trust me; I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made that mistake.

Finally, a brief comment as a mod: I understand your frustration, but be thoughtful about when you bring it here and how you frame it if you do bring it here. In this instance, we already have a number of commenters on Oppositelock who would happily go troll Jezebel at the drop of a hat, and we DO NOT condone trolling. In fact, if anyone is caught doing so, they will be summarily banned to banadu. Forever. I don’t want them getting all riled up.

And that’s about it. Relax. You’re cool. Forget about this and have an awesome holiday.

Unless, they’re not Christian (people can be really nasty if they find out you don’t believe in Jesus), are gay, have a disability, were born in a different country, etc. Then it’s basically an everyday issue. This is good Oppo. Thanks for the thought out reply. There were othets but I believe they either deleted or a mod deleted their comments. What it seems to come down to is that men in the workplace are more likely to be told to do something dangerous or life threatening and women are more likely to be sexually harassed or even assaulted. Obviously those are huge generalizations but would it be a leap to consider them both forms of injury, and not altogether dissimilar?
